3 Must-Haves for Full-Timing RVs and Pets (Especially Dogs)
RVs and pets, especially RVs and dogs, go together like peanut butter and jelly. After all, the number one reason why people don’t get dogs is because they don’t have enough time. But when you’re traveling in an RV, then you have the ability to spend as much, up to nearly all your time, with your pet.
However, while RVs and pets do go along well together, not every RV is well set up for larger pets like dogs. The following is a look at three key things you should make sure your RV has before you jump on the RVs and pets bandwagon by adding a new puppy to your household:
3 Must-Haves for Full-Timing RVs and Pets
- Quiet space for the dog bed (preferably in the bedroom). Dogs naturally like to seek out a den-like space to sleep and rest in. This is why the vast majority of dogs take to crates so well. Unfortunately, most RVs can’t fit a full-size crate comfortably, but you should be able to squeeze a nice-sized dog bed or two in your bedroom.
- Temperature control settings. RVs can get unbearably hot when left closed up without climate control during the summer. This extreme heat can cause your pet distress and even risk of a heat stroke. The good news is that most RVs today come integrated with both seamless electric hookups and battery backup systems. These systems allow you to set a comfortable interior temperature for those times when you need to leave your pet for a couple of hours.
- Minimal carpeting. This one you can maybe skip, but not without a lot of frustration. Dogs shed a lot. In addition to that, there’s all of the dirt, sand, and outdoor elements that come with the camping aspect of RVs and pets. Put all that hair and tracked-in dirt together and you’ll get a lot of frustration if you opt for a carpeted interior. Instead, keep it simple and go for linoleum or a similar hard flooring option.
