The Arizona RV Life: 3 Cool Places To Boondock
We love Arizona. We love the wide open sky, the friendly people, and the gorgeous desert landscapes. After all, our team at Premier Coach Works doesn’t just work on RVs and camper vans, they have their own to explore and enjoy RV life with. And while there are some really great RV campgrounds and state parks, sometimes it’s nice to go out and boondock. Boondocking is when you camp off-the-grid primitive-like, which you can do legally in Arizona’s BLM and state lands. Here’s a look at three of our team’s favorite places to boondock in Arizona:
The Arizona RV Life: 3 Cool Places To Boondock
- Fire Control Road & Verde Glen Campground. Just north of Payson, Arizona, Fire Control Road meanders for 23 miles and has several places where you can pull off and enjoy RV life far away from others. The best location is probably the Verde Glen Campground at the western end of the road. Although “campground” is a bit of a misnomer, as no campsites are marked, but you can legally overnight camp so long as you have a self-contained vehicle (note: trailers over 16ft aren’t recommended).
- Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Operated by the Bureau of Land Management, Las Cienegas National Conservation Area has many fantastic spots where RVers (4×4 is recommended) can enjoy dispersed camping. BLM does have its own designated camping areas, but you will find plenty of ones that are far away from others. This is a fantastic place to go if you want to experience boondocking RV life under the desert stars.
- Forest Road 525 (also called Loy Butte Road) Near Sedona. Sedona is one of the most popular towns to visit in Arizona, thanks to its gorgeous geography and artistic downtown area. Unfortunately, this popularity means that campgrounds are often filled up. The good news is that there are some excellent pull-out locations along Forest Road 525 just to the north of Sedona.

Boondocking is a wonderful way to experience Arizona, but it isn’t for everyone, and it is important that if you go this route, you do so with proper awareness. Make sure your RV is properly equipped, that you don’t go down any roads your tires can’t handle, and that you do proper research on locations before you go.
