Maintenance Tips to Avoid Premature & Pricey RV Roof Repair

When it comes to comparing tent camping with RV camping, one of the most notable differences lies in the roof. Having a solid roof over your head wherever you go or spend the night really changes the camping experience. With a solid roof, you can weather storms and enjoy nice ambient temperatures every day of the year. However, you do need to do some routine care and maintenance to ensure you enjoy the major benefits of having a roof and not the undesired experience of a sudden roof leak flooding out your belongings. The following is a look at some key care and maintenance tips that will keep your roof in good condition so that you don’t need to worry about premature and expensive RV roof repair:

Tips for Roof Maintenance So You Can Avoid Premature & Expensive RV Roof Repair

  • Give your RV a thorough inspection and cleaning every season. Regular inspections are the best way to ensure that you avoid a very expensive repair down the line. We recommend checking your RV roof at least once every season and before taking it out for a long road trip. You should also consider having one of our technicians look over the roof whenever you bring your motorhome in for maintenance.
  • Avoid using harsh solvents, chemicals, and conditioners when cleaning rubber RV roofs. Rubber roofs can be irrevocably damaged if the wrong chemicals are used. So while it may require more scrubbing and more work, it’s always advisable to use mild soap, hard water, and a medium bristle brush when cleaning the rubber roof on an RV.
  • Invest in an RV covering. The best way to limit the rain, dirt, and other debris from impacting your RV roof is to use a cover or keep your RV in a garage or underneath a similar shelter. Covers also are great for preventing long-term UV damage which can cause caulking to crack and degrade. However, if you do use a cloth or similar type of covering, make sure to regularly take it off to allow air to circulate across your roof and prevent mold growth.
  • Regularly have sealant inspected. Depending upon the brand and quality of caulking you use and how often and where you use your RV, you may need to have your motorhome re-caulked every year. Caulking is essential, as it prevents water from seeping into your vehicle and causing harm to your building materials and property.
  • Don’t forget to clean your air conditioner. If you have an on-roof air conditioning unit, note that this is also prone to leaking and dirt buildup that can harm your RV roof. Keep your filter clean and regularly check for leaks around the unit.
